WORKSHOP EXAMPLES (CUSTOMIZED AS NEEDED)

Project:  Positive Concerns and Vision & Opportunity:

Workshop Plan/Idea:  The youth breakout into two groups, Positive Concerns or Vision & Opportunity.  They will learn about various topics during their workshops by interacting with other youth and being directed by the “All Empowered Leaders.”  All sessions will contain an icebreaker, the info and learning session, and discussion and reflection time.  A creative assignment will be given to each youth at the end of every session, and the assignment will be presented three weeks from then (the 4th Saturday of every month) at the socials.  Socials will take place at various meeting areas, such as Starbucks, Apex Museum, High Museum, etc.

Workshop #1: Public Speaking and Expression     Social #1:  “Who am I” Portfolio presentation

Workshop #2:  Health and Awareness               Social #2:  Poetry/rap  reading/story-telling

Workshop #3:  Social/Cultural Issues               Social #3:  A Day in Your Neighborhood (scrapbook)

The participants meet twice per month on the 1st and 4th Saturday (or agreed upon dates).  The youth are given an assignment to present during each workshop.  The topics vary from self-exploration to civic and social issues.  On the 4th Saturday of the month, we visit various community organizations and engage the students in activities that assist in promoting their speaking, listening, reading, writing, social studies, math and science skills.  Many of our youth have since participated on debate teams, public speaking contents and civic responsibility campaigns.  Sample assignments may include to devise a tool to gain easier access for water in Africa, develop a procress to decrease traffic in the city where you live, or develop a socially conscious program for Global Warming.

Project:  This Is Right For Me!

This project carefully works with educators, counselors, parents, guardians and the community to select participants who lack grooming, hygiene and positive social skills.  We will implement “How To” projects, such as applying healthy hairstyles that are not costly or difficult to maintain; educate on appropriate dress for various occasions and in general; educate youth about nutrition and exercise for healthier lifestyles; implement hair and fashion workshops to provide access to ongoing updates about what’s new and is this right for the participant.

Workshop #1:  Educate youth on the importance of nutrition, exercise and hygiene.  Provide sample products and coupons to support utilization of products and techniques.

Workshop #2:  Receive discounted or in-kind services from a selected salon/barbershop in the community to assist youth select a hairstyle that will complement and build self-esteem.  Receive products from beauty suppliers to support hair care management.  The styles selected will be those that the youth are able to maintain with possible visits to the salon every six-eight weeks.  Create peer support groups to educate and encourage youth to learn how to minimize or eliminate visits to the salon and perform the service themselves when appropriate.  Appropriate nail care, facials and overall grooming are included in this workshop.

Workshop #3:  Fashion consultants facilitate workshops on appropriate affordable clothing for youth and their peers.  Receive donations from clothing stores or manufacturers to provide a start-up clothing kit that consists of interchangeable outfits that are machine or hand washable.

Outcomes:

  • Youth will have input and make decisions regarding the activities they take part in, the rules they abide by, and the setting where they spend their time
  • Youth will take on meaningful roles that involve responsibility and opportunities for leadership
  • Youth will become involved in the larger community and make real contributions while broadening their knowledge and understanding of the world around them
  • Youth will be exposed to a wide range of challenging and interesting learning experiences that help them build understanding, skills and competencies
